Salute to our Troops

Special Thanks to my Maternal Grandfather Carl E. Miller who served in the army during World War II. His service to our country included being held captive in Hitler’s Nazi Concentration Camps, not once but twice. He nearly starved to death before he was rescued.
Yes, he suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, commonly called PTSD. This is very common among our service men and women as well as others. So you never know at what cost Freedom has been given.

Here’s a great link to The ultimate PTSD Guide
Special thanks to my Father, Eugene Smith, for his service in the army during the Korean War. We are also grateful for his subsequent service in Berlin, Germany.

My Father was barely 18 when he was sent off to the Korean war. He and my mother often spoke of their adventures in Berlin Germany during his service. It wasn’t until my Mother passed, that he spoke to me about some of his experiences in Korea. Dad was a medic on the front line. His experiences are what nightmares are made of.
Salute to the spouses that are left behind
Lest we forget the ones that are keeping the home fires burning. My Grandmother had 4 children while my Grandfather was away. My parents did not have me until they were out of the service. However, my first husband was Military and we had two small children at home. At one point during our time together, he went to Officer’s candidate school. That left me alone for several months with a 6 month old baby and a 3 year old. During that time I was working full-time and my dear Grandmother was ill with cancer. I managed, but I have no clue how my Grandmother managed with 4 children. I personally salute the spouses that are at home waiting patiently for their loved ones to return.
Please remember to honor our Veterans as they and their families endure so much to give our country something so precious; Our Freedom.

30% of completed suicides were preceded by alcohol or drug use among Veterans and Military personnel.
There is a great need for addiction treatment among our Military and Vets. That is why Drug Rehab USA has created a resource that allows Veterans and Military personnel to locate rehabs that accept TRICARE Military Insurance.
TRICARE is a health program for Uniformed Service members and their families. Many addiction treatment Facilities accept TRICARE Insurance for substance use disorders.
Drug Rehab USA created a free rehab directory that uses location technology to display addiction treatment near you for treatment centers that accept military insurance TRICARE.
The data in this directory comes from Behavioral Health Treatment Services Locator by SAMSHA. Feedback from user of their addiction treatment directory convinced Drug Rehab USA that we need to create a user friendly substance use disorder directory.
Their Mission: To reduce the impact of substance abuse by helping our military active duty and veterans locate proper treatment. Here is the rehab directory website for Veterans: https://drugrehabus.org/rehabs/treatment/tricare/

Have what is called, Dual diagnosis. This is a relatively new term. It describes an individual with a drug dependency and an underlying mental health disorder.
A study funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) demonstrates significant findings. It shows that about 23 million Americans suffer from some form of a co-occurring disorder. This is associated with a substance use disorder (National Institutes of Health, 2015). These comorbid disorders are considered dual diagnosis disorders. The survey also reveals that the majority of these disorders are left untreated.
Mental Health & Substance Abuse
Dual diagnosis treatment is an integrated, coordinated approach to substance abuse and mental health interventions for individuals with co-occurring disorders. This means that multidisciplinary teams of clinicians are working together under one roof to provide client-centered, seamless services ranging from holistic therapy to social skills training with a consistent approach.
How Common Is Dual Diagnosis?
People who have mental illnesses are twice as likely as the rest of the population to engage in substance abuse. At the same time, individuals who struggle with substance abuse tend to be more likely to develop a mental illness. They might also develop a behavioral disorder. It’s an accepted fact that mental illness can lead to substance abuse, and that addiction can cause other mental illnesses.
Dual diagnosis is far more common now. Previously, mental illness and addiction were treated as separate conditions. A person with depression or bipolar disorder would be referred to a mental health facility.
Someone addicted to alcohol or drugs would be referred to an addiction rehab center. The problem with this approach is both conditions often did not receive adequate treatment.
For example, a patient in rehab might be discharged for not responding to treatment due to their mental disorder. Meanwhile, a person in a mental health facility might be prescribed medication to treat their disorder. However, their addiction to drugs or alcohol ends up interfering.
It’s easy to understand why both conditions are treated together. They are considered co-occurring disorders at most addiction treatment centers.
